Clinical Training
Ms Neeru A. Vallabh is a consultant ophthalmologist and a clinical academic with a specialisation in glaucoma.
Her career in ophthalmology began after completing a one-month elective at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard University) during medical school. She graduated with merit from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in 2008, following which she embarked on a clinical training pathway in ophthalmology within the Mersey Deanery.
She undertook a 6 month glaucoma subspecialty placement in Bolton Royal Hospital. In Feburary 2020 she undertook an 18 month subspecialty glaucoma fellowship training in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, further refining her glaucoma clinical and surgical skills.

Research
Neeru Vallabh developed an early interest in glaucoma research and the pursuit of how to understand the condition and better manage the condition. She began pursuing an academic clinical career in 2016. She was awarded a PhD from the University of Liverpool in January 2021, following research that focused on mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of glaucoma. This research allowed her to build expertise in a range of laboratory techniques, including DNA extraction, sequencing, and molecular biology.
Throughout this period, she gained recognition for her research, presenting at prominent international forums such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), where she won the Best Poster Prize in the Genetics Cross Section category. She has established collaborative links with leading national and international experts in the field and is committed to advancing the understanding and management of glaucoma through her research.

Current Practice
In September 2021, she was appointed a clinical academic post as Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and Glaucoma Consultant at University Hospitals of Liverpool.
Neeru is involved in teaching and mentoring and regularly supervises medical students, ophthalmology trainees, PhD candidates, and clinical fellows. She is passionate about education and provides formal teaching and supervision in both clinical and laboratory settings. She also regularly contributes to regional teaching events and national conferences, sharing her knowledge and expertise to inspire the next generation of ophthalmologists.
Neeru is actively involved in public engagement and education. She has delivered presentations at patient support groups and taken part in public information campaigns, including World Glaucoma Week, where she led outreach activities to raise awareness of the disease.
Her passion for glaucoma, combined with her commitment to academic research, has shaped a career that blends advanced clinical practice with cutting-edge research.
